The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All anime adaptation will premiere in January 2027, as announced at the Anime Expo 2026 event.
Created by Sumiko Arai, it started as a series of Twitter illustrations in 2022 before being serialized by Pixiv in April 2023. Nicknamed Green Yuri for the striking lime green-black-white color tone, the series is popular for its depiction of a yuri (girls’ love) relationship of its main characters, as well as Arai’s extensive references and knowledge in popular rock music.
The story tells of the relationship between two classmates, Aya Osawa and Mitsuki Koga. It started when Aya visited a record store and had a crush for the seemingly handsome clerk donning a face mask. They frequently shared their love of rock music during each of Aya’s visits, something that Aya’s unable to do with her close friends.
Unbeknownst to Aya, the clerk is actually Mitsuki, who tries to hide her part-time job. After discovering the fact, Aya helped cover Mitsuki’s double life, whereas the latter also found herself falling for Aya. The series further explores their way of navigating school and daily lives, as well as discovering their true feelings for each other.
The Guy She Was Interested in Wasn’t a Guy at All anime will be animated by CloverWorks. Some cast members from the drama CD adaptation confirmed reprising their roles, such as Akari Kito as Aya and Mariya Ise as Mitsuki.
Masashi Ishihama will direct the anime, with Rino Yamazaki filling in as the writer. Legendary grunge band Nirvana will be featured in the anime, with their classic song “Breed” from the album Never Mind chosen as the opening song.
The anime adaptation has also been blessed by Dave Grohl, Nirvana’s drummer and also the vocalist-guitarist of his own band, Foo Fighters. “I think that Kurt (Cobain) definitely would have loved this,” said Grohl during an interview with Sumiko Arai.
Grohl’s sentiment would also align with Nirvana’s and Kurt Cobain’s core values. The late frontman was known for his support for same-sex relationships. “I’m not gay, although I wish I were, just to piss off the homophobes,” said Cobain in one of his popular quotes.
